Future for the Past: A Tribute to Warren Sonbert & The Estate Project
Warren Sonbert (U.S.)Warren Sonbert's films, rooted in the avant-garde "diarist" film tradition, reveal a probing and playful artist and a keen intellect reveling in the interplay between all the creative arts. This memorial program has been made possible through the support of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, which supported the preservation of these Sonbert films. Amphetamine (Sonbert, Wendy Appel, 1966, 10 mins), an early tour de force of sixties counterculture. A Woman's Touch (Sonbert, 1983, 23 mins), an evolution from in-camera editing to montage strategy. The Tenth Legion (Sonbert, 1967, 25 mins): Sonbert observes his characters with a studied detachment. Whiplash (Sonbert, completed by Jeff Scher, 1995/1997, 20 mins): Sonbert explores the legacy of values by which he intended to be remembered, most importantly that of love. Warren (Jeff Scher, 1992, 3 mins): Scher turns the tables on his former teacher and mentor.
