Gaea Girls
The directors, best known for Dream Girls and Shinjuku Boys, and most recently for Longinotto's Divorce, Iranian Style, continue their unique explorations of the lives of women marginalized in their own societies. Exploding gender conventions once again, this purely observational and surely controversial film provides an extraordinary look at the world of female wrestling in Japan. Filled with high-paced and often brutal action, the film follows the members of the Gaea Girls, a training house for young women wrestlers. Here, where physical aggression is circumscribed with decorum, the courage and determination of these young women both frighten and inspire. As in Divorce, Iranian Style, the filmmakers take a ringside seat. "Unlike the show-biz bouts of the WWF in the U.S., the fights here are very much the real thing (captured) in all their bone-crunching, wince-inducing detail." (Sight & Sound)
