In this two-part presentation, BAM/PFA Chief Curator and Director of Programs and Collections Lucinda Barnes opens the program with a discussion of Kurt Schwitters's Merzbau in the context of his artistic practice, and introduces how the reconstruction on view came about. San Francisco-based Swiss artist Mona Caron, whose father, Peter Bissegger, reconstructed the Merzbau between 1981 and 1983, then offers insights into Schwitters's artistic process, as well as into his character, that emerged during the research for the reconstruction of Schwitters's monumental installation piece.
