Gangway

"Despite an aggressively effervescent script, and some rather heavy-handed satire of American gangsterism, this Matthews vehicle holds up rather well. Her husband Sonnie Hale was never as good a director as Victor Saville had been, but he certainly keeps things moving. Somewhat unfairly criticized for short-changing the audience in the music department (actually it has half a dozen song-and-dance interludes) it does however sadly lack a big climactic production number to showcase Matthews' unique talents. But just when its convoluted story-line seems to be getting out of hand, Alastair Sim is added to the cast to justify the absurdity." William K. Everson
