Gap-Toothed Women
Les Blank's films are always for pleasure...and more. This lively examination of the folklore surrounding gap-toothed women also takes a feminist look at the larger picture, the cultural relativity of female beauty and self-image. There is Chaucer's Wife of Bath, whose amorous proclivities are attributed to the abyss between her ivories; American model and actress Lauren Hutton, who always thought she was a homely thing thanks to The Gap; and lucky African women for whom gap-teeth are considered a sign of good fortune.
