Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers
Appetizers: Chicken Soup (Kenny Schneider, U.S., 1970). The making of a delicious Jewish chicken soup, as demonstrated by an elderly couple, Willie and Anna Schecter. Anna speaks directly to the camera, revealing as much about herself as about her cooking skills. Photographed by Mark Obenhaus. (1970, 14 mins, B&W, 16mm, From artist) Yum Yum Yum! (Les Blank, U.S., 1990). Les Blank's films are always, but not only, for pleasure: they also reveal important aspects of daily existence, such as how people nourish themselves. Yum Yum Yum! explores the marriage of food and music that keeps the Cajun and Creole cultures of Southern Louisiana "cooking with gas." With musician/Cajun cook Marc Savoy; food and music by "Queen" Ida Guillory and others. Photographed by Blank. (31 mins, Color, 16mm, From Flower Films) "'Fight Mouthwash-Eat Garlic' is the call-to-arms of Blank's exploration of alternative American lifestyles. Why garlic-quite possibly the greatest culinary aid and natural cure-all known to mankind-should have gotten so much bad press in the first place is the curious (and distinctly political) paradox that Blank explores. (The film is) obsessed (with) the growing and harvesting of garlic and the preparation, cooking and eating of garlic dishes. The garlic cooking of many cultures-Chinese, Mexican, Spanish, French, Cajun, Italian-is explored. As in all of Blank's films these garlic-lovers take great pride in their own identity, glorifying it in song and dance and turning it into constant celebration."-Rob Baker, The Soho Weekly News (extract)
