Gemini

A period-film fever dream-as if Cronenberg had adapted Edgar Allan Poe-Gemini updates the early 1900s mystery writer Edogawa Rampo through the maniacal lens of cyberpunk director Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo: Iron Man). In 1910 Japan, the upright, fastidious Dr. Daitokuji has a loving family, a successful medical practice, and a beautiful bride who suffers from amnesia. Life just can't get any better-until his parents are mysteriously killed, and his heretofore unknown, family-forsaken twin brother tosses him down a well and assumes his identity. Switching the slime of the slums for the pomade of the elite, this malevolent feral twin might even fool the bride, unless Dr. Daitokuji can summon enough "low-class" rage to crawl his way out of that well. Eye-catching Victorian/punk costumes, otherworldly hair and makeup designs, a blistering Japanese noise soundtrack, and cameos by famed butoh dancers and science fiction novelists further heighten Tsukamoto's jaw-dropping, anachronistic, speedmetal vision of love and horror in Meiji Japan.-Jason Sanders
