George Kuchar: The Comedy of the Underground and Short Films
George Kuchar: The Comedy of the Underground: A new documentary that at last will bring local attention to San Francisco's world-famous maestro of underground film, this film portrait takes you into Kuchar's world, from his roots in the Bronx to his present Mission District flat, with clips from his bizarre films and interviews with family and friends. For those not acquainted with Kuchar, a few words of description from J. Hoberman in the Village Voice (12/8/75): “With considerable energy, ebullience, and wit, Kuchar depicts his once-imagined California paradise as a forbidden planet, long ruled by celluloid monsters from the id.... Unlike John Waters or Russ Meyer...(Kuchar's work) is not ‘hipper' than its depiction of human misery.... Kuchar, with his evident love of cinema, empathetic characters, and dialectical opposition of yearning and reality, uses shock footage to scream and not to sneer.”
