Gesture Incorporated: Recent Videoworks by Torsten Zenas Burns

In Torsten Burns's video works, the body's surface metaphorically extends out, making what he calls "energistic" linkages with mundane spaces. Focused on a convulsive accumulation of physical gestures, Burns unveils anxiety-driven scenarios in which everyday objects take on talismanic meaning. This is the panic-body "activating" a desperate relationship with its surroundings. What you see are movement works, eerily rendered in smeared colors, murky images, and reverse motion, a unique aesthetic filled with "crisis re-enactments." For tonight's program, we offer the premiere of the Corp Series-Gesturecorp (1997, 10:30 mins), Communicorp (1997,11:45 mins) and Mobilecorp (1997, 4 mins)-a triad of "activation" works in which Burns infuses familiar domestic spaces with low-res alienation. Mops, scuba gear, a baby's crib, skis, a vacuum cleaner: juxtaposed with his strange gestural language, commonplace props float outside the ordinary. Torsten Burns's cryptic scenarios may escape you, but his anxious movements are inescapable.Several other works, created in partnership with Anthony Discenza under the name of Halflifers, will be screened, including the premiere of Actions in Action (12 mins), Homesteaders (17:30 mins), Control Corridor (11:30 mins), and Microstations (Proploader 1) (6 mins). -Steve Seid
