Ghost World
Join us in celebrating the charmed collaboration of two Bay Area originals: filmmaker Terry Zwigoff and cartoonist and screenwriter Daniel Clowes.
The world as we know it is just not good enough for Enid (Thora Birch) and her fave sidekick Rebecca (Scarlet Johansson). A surly duo, they prefer the already outré to the built-in disappointments of more recent relics. This is especially true of Enid, a sourpuss draped in thrift store couture who constantly projects failures of taste on everyone around her. Just out of high school, our “geek goddess” quakes before the coming collision with adulthood. Only Seymour (Steve Buscemi), a sad sack years her senior, possesses the right brand of dorkiness in his old-school collection of LPs. He becomes Enid's broken rebel, too damaged to buy in, too quirky to sell out. Altering the episodic nature of Clowes's great graphic novel, Clowes and Zwigoff have retained strong hints of the comic while concocting a cinema spin-off of muted pastels and palpable hysteria. Funny, fragile, and fashion-forming, Ghost World imagines a vague refuge where outsiders are what's in.
