Giants of Jazz
Los Angeles based jazz-film archivist Mark Cantor returns to the Bay Area with two special programs of music on film, tonight and Sunday afternoon, April 28. “This evening's program features some of the greatest names in jazz, most of whom appear in films which have not been shared in past programs. Clips from the 1930s, '40s and '50s include such masters of swing as Art Tatum (rare newsreel production footage), Roy Eldridge and Coleman Hawkins (from an early Jazz at the Philharmonic concert), Duke Ellington (appearing in an early feature film), Benny Goodman (from an advertising film made for the March of Dimes), and many others. Contemporary jazz will also be featured with the spotlight thrown on such figures as Thelonius Monk, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane (with the quintet that also featured Eric Dolphy!). Expect some last-minute surprises!” (Mark Cantor)
