Girls Like Us

Recommended for ages 12+. Four teenage girls from diverse ethnic backgrounds are filmed over four years in their working-class South Philadelphia neighborhood, allowing us a rare and totally honest view of what it means to grow up female in the nineties. Intimate conversations, difficult decisions, external pressures-all of life's details naturally unfold before the camera as these young women define their identities and their futures. (56 mins) Shown with Double D (Laura Bennett, U.S., 1997, 12 mins), one well-endowed teen's take on life, family, and her idol, Dolly Parton; and El Corrido de Cecilia Rios (Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, U.S., 1997, 14 mins), the story of a teenage girl's senseless murder in Richmond, California and her community's efforts to come to terms with the loss.
