Go to Hell, Hoodlums!
Suzuki's first color film features someof his early experiments in extra-narrative use of color. Thesixteen-year-old star, Koji Wada, was already a top grosser at Nikkatsuand the film also played off a commercial sales angle-the use of AwajiIsland locales, supported by the local tourist bureau. Wada plays ayoung painter's assistant in Tokyo who, unbeknownst to him, is also thesole male heir to an illustrious Awaji Island family, of which he was anillegitimate offspring. Drawn back to the island, he reunites with hiselderly grandmother-who has a certain affinity for the young rock 'n'roller-and runs afoul of a crooked developer whose secretary happens tobe, yes, his long lost mother. The kidnapping of the old lady, a policechase by boat, and a climactic whirlpool are grist for the Suzukimill.
