God Speed You, Black Emperor

The first film by Yanagimachi, who directed the acclaimed Farewell to the Land and Himatsuri, was this documentary shot during 1974-75. "The subject is a Tokyo motorcycle gang and the film was shot without a script. According to the director, 'This was the only way to capture the lives of these kids. Society has its own rationale, its own laws, but these have no relevance for them.' And Yanagimachi has certainly not attempted to make a problem picture-for him there is no problem. Nothing needs justification, for society-versus-the-individual is a false equation in Yanagimachi's view. He is interested in describing, in looking and listening. There is no story in this film, no voice-over commentary...One of the boys says he wants nothing to do with society, even though this statement is filmed within the context of a gang meeting-a society, in fact. Parents speak sorrowfully of a wayward son, and in the process reveal just how wayward they are themselves...Yanagimachi remains evenhanded and intensely ambivalent." --Donald Richie, Toronto Festival '90
