The Golden West
Although proudly claiming to be based on a Zane Grey story, it can be (at best) an outline he wrote on a menu in the Fox commissary, since it is related to no known Grey story, although the first half, dealing with Southern feuding, is akin to themes he used in "The Last Trail" and "To the Last Man." Its first half is extremely carefully done, then it switches stories rather surprisingly in mid-stream, to become a kind of miniature The Iron Horse, using much footage from that John Ford classic. Highlights include a superbly staged rescue from a buffalo stampede, and the interesting acknowledgment of the role played by itinerant Jewish peddlers in helping to settle the West. William K.
