A Good Lawyer's Wife

Im Sang-soo wants to talk to you about sex. That's what he did in Girls' Night Out and Tears and it's what he does in this serious drama. Lawyer Young-jak (Hwang Jung-min) counsels families of massacre victims in between spending time with his family and carrying on an affair. Wife Ho-jung (Moon So-ri) cares for their son and her in-laws between dance rehearsals. Aware of Young-jak's infidelity, Ho-jung begins fancying the high school boy next door. Im continues the recent trend among Korean directors of both sexes to confront shifting gender roles, part of what has made Korean cinema so exciting in the past few years. Moon So-ri won Best Young Actress at Venice for her role as a woman with cerebral palsy in Oasis, and her character here is not that different. Both are women trying to find comfort in their bodies, striving to release themselves from the constraints that bind them.
