Good News

A look at "newspaper vendors, dead dogs and other Viennese" (as its subheading proclaims), Seidl's first feature-length work found his trademark long takes and tracking shots already well in place. It's wintertime and the Krone and Kurier newspapers are running contests for "Austrians who have done something for the country." But it's their mainly immigrant vendors who seem to be keeping much of the frozen-over nation running. Seidl's camera tracks these (frequently freezing) Bengalis, Pakistanis, Serbs, and Romanies as they attempt to sell one paper at a time, following them with prowling long takes along their rounds. Using cinema like photography, Seidl achieves the highest grace - and the most pointed social commentary - within the stillest frames: a Sikh sadly sings the praises of the Krone, a Bengali shivering in the cold cradles the Kurier, or a vendor stands alone in a silent, gray subway station, as "other Viennese" mutely pass by.
