Gospel
Directors in Person Filmed at Oakland's Paramount Theater, Gospel is a moving, musical extravaganza featuring some of gospel's leading lights: James Cleveland, Walter Hawkins and the Hawkins Family, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Shirley Caesar, and The Clark Sisters. Shot during one concert, with seven cameras and 24-track Dolby sound, the film is designed to recreate the emotional experience of the live performance, audience response and all, in Dolby surround-sound. As co-director Ritzenberg told one critic, "The viewer won't know if the person next to him is yelling 'Thank you, Jesus' or if it's coming out of the speaker." Gospel has been called "Aural high!" (Janet Maslin, New York Times); "Unrestrained, joyous music! It's a great experience and a whole lot of fun" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times); "Beautifully shot! With a sumptuous Dolby stereo soundtrack, this really is heavenly music" (David Chute, Los Angeles Herald). Local directors Leivick and Ritzenberg have made a new print of Gospel to present tonight, in celebration of PFA's twentieth anniversary and the new Dolby system, recently installed.
