Guilt and Remembrance

Four former Nazi officials in Austria, some convicted of war crimes, all now respected citizens, describe their undying commitment to Hitler and their role in the Nazi system. Though it delves into the past, Guilt and Remembrance is a film in the present tense. Unspoken is that the current mood in Europe-not only the wave of historical revisionism but the upsurge of ethnic rivalries-seems to offer a new freedom for such individuals to publicly revive the beliefs and memories they hav nursed over the decades since the war. "Lies have short wings," says one. "A few more decades, and the people will praise Adolph Hitler." This is one cautionary message of this fascinating and disturbing film. The other is about language and the tricks of its use: four "talking heads" become studies in the psycho-linguistics of fascism.
