I must admit that I have always found this most celebrated of all Raymond Griffith comedies somewhat overrated, its best moments-like the brief firing squad scene-being almost throwaway gags. Kevin Brownlow on the other hand considers it a comic masterpiece, and Kevin is usually right! Either way, Griffith is always a comedian worth watching-or discovering-and this print of his Civil War comedy (maybe I'm always disappointed because it just isn't in the same league as Keaton's The General) is of the full version, with the often-deleted and delightful trick ending. -William K.
