"Balfe's operetta works surprisingly well without the songs, though some of us may miss Laurel and Hardy! It's a handsomely mounted film, with a powerhouse cast: Ivor Novello, Gladys Cooper, C. Aubrey Smith, Constance Collier and Ellen Terry. It's also academically fascinating for being the earliest extant film on which Josef von Sternberg worked (he was, and recognizably so, the film's 2nd Unit director)." William K. Everson
