Hearing Voices
Sharon Greytak's narrative feature-film debut is an elegant and hard-hitting drama concerning contemporary subjects that are rarely talked about. Erika (Erika Nagy) is a beautiful and successful hand model. The experience of undergoing ileostomy surgery, requiring her to now wear a bag at her waist, acts as a catalyst for a complex re-examination of self-esteem and self-image. At the end of an abusive relationship with a man who is also a model (Michael Davenport), she begins a love affair with a gay man (Stephen Gatta) that has its own challenges. Greytak writes, "Hearing Voices is closely linked to theater with dialogue simultaneously directed toward character and audience. Stylistically presented in tableaux fashion, characters are often symbolic representations of Erika's hopes and fears. The issues of cultivating a public and private identity, narcissism, women with disabilities staying in abusive relationships, and the complex territory of heterosexual women and gay men, are the threads for this story of a strong woman."
