Heaven-6-Box
Oki Hiroyuki has been described as "the best-known avant-garde filmmaker in Japan." Heaven-6-Box, commissioned by the local council of Kochi, in Shikoku, on the opening of their Museum of Modern Art, is a portrait of Kochi, where Oki also lives. Oki's impressionistic documentary interweaves community events-a concert on the water's edge, a performance-art piece; daily life-people in meetings, at the fish-market, in offices; and portraits of city residents, often standing alone on a city street. The almost still-life portraits are a quiet reminder of individual lives amidst the community while Oki's beautiful camera work recalls the pleasures to be found in the everyday.
