Henry Geldzahler

This is a portrait of Henry Geldzahler, sitting on a couch and puffing a cigar. An influential museum curator, and Warhol's friend, Geldzahler is captured with a cool distance (in medium shot), the camera relentlessly recording his every movement. The result, oddly, is one of Warhol's most intimate (and sublime) portraits. Geldzahler himself commented on the film: "As in Satie's Vexations, when the same twenty-second piece is repeated for eighteen hours, we find that the more that is eliminated the greater concentration is possible on the spare remaining essentials. The slightest variation becomes an event, something on which we can focus our attention."
