High Street (Rue Haute)
A testament to the terrible legacy left by the brutal Nazi presence in Brussels during World War II, this extraordinary drama features Annie Cordy as a Belgian woman who has been insane ever since her husband and son were murdered in 1943. Her rantings attract the attention of an American ex-patriot artist, played by Mort Shuman (who also wrote the score). He begins to investigate the causes of her insanity, and his life is transformed in the process.
High Street was called in the Village Voice, “a rich, beautiful experience...that helps to make us all a little more alive,” and in the New York Times, “A chilling and volatile depiction of agony, profound rage, grief and madness....”
