Highlights from the Black Maria Film and Video Festival
Curated and Introduced by John ColumbusArtist Charlotte Lagard in Person Note: UAM/PFA member's discount applies to Film Arts Foundation members for tickets to both the 7:30 and 9:30 programs. The beautiful, ethereal Cloth and Bone by Anouck Ayer is composed of multi-layered collage photograms, dissolving through a lacy web work of artifacts of memory. The experimental documentary A Wild Horse Rider is a portrait of a father and daughter, videomaker Dulcie Clarkson, meeting after a long separation. This piece tellingly explores the meaning of manhood, fatherhood, and the myth of the cowboy in America. Ariana Gerstein's intensely rhythmical work Losing Touch violates the sanctity of the film material by working directly on the celluloid, making diagonal physical cuts and in other ways disrupting the image. FEET is a beguiling video portrait of an intimate friend of the artist Vincent Grenier and her rapport with her young son and teenage daughter. She and her children were asked to reconstruct their daily rituals. Dennis Darmek's Buddha's Radio is a dreamlike, layered journey through memories of Vietnam. Charlotte Lagard's concise portrait of a breast cancer survivor, Zeuf, documents her highly sensible and inspirational reaction to her predicament. Lush imagery and exotic flora and fauna grace Suzan Pitt's vibrant animation Joy Street as it unfolds from a melancholy story, first gradually, then in a riot of color and phantasmagoric dreamscapes.-John Columbus Cloth and Bone (Anouck Ayer, NJ, 1995, 4 mins, B&W, 3/4" video).
