Hollywood Boulevard

"Robert Florey, like Ackland, loved movies and movie-making, and many of his superior 'B's and program melodramas at Paramount were literally set in the studio. Hollywood Boulevard, dealing with a Confidental-type magazine, has a good enough plot to justify 'A' production, and some of its potential is minimised here in grade-B scripting. But Florey gives it plenty of visual style and a sense of authenticity, plus good opportunities to players (particularly John Halliday and Mae Marsh) normally wasted (at that particular time) in stereotyped or minor roles. The trick with this one is not to expect too much; for a programmer, it actually delivers far more than one has a right to expect!"
