Home and Abroad with Kidlat Tahimik

Few filmmakers have perfected the personal essay film as well as Tahimik, as this collection of shorter works makes brilliantly clear. Whether befriending rice farmers in Japan and Tibetan porters in the Himalayas, penning video letters to his three sons, or embarking on a “film-grimage” to the oil-spill-ruined island of Guimares, Tahimik proves himself not only a witty essayist, but a wise and wonderful host. Showcasing the rice harvests of Japan and the Philippines, the painstaking trimming of a bamboo temple's straw roof, or the planting of trees that will not blossom until 2021, Tahimik finds the most wondrous beauty in the most earthly tasks; in these works, creativity is embodied not only in art, but craft. In Roofs of the World, Unite! we also witness a fire that consumed his home, and much of his work, in 2004.
