Home and Away
Football-pool comedies were always popular in England, and this faintly Capraesque one, based on a successful play, is not only a pleasing example of British regional humor, but is also a sort of unofficial continuation of the "Huggett Family" series, though made independently and on a modest budget. (The plot concerns some shenanigans with a winning football-pool ticket and the family's attempts to hold on to their well-deserved share.) A bonus this time is that Jack Warner and Kathleen Harrison are virtually co-starred with that great character actress Thora Hird, and the results are decidedly lively. Vernon Sewell (a protégé of and 2nd unit director for Michael Powell) was in a sense Britain's Edgar Ulmer, often turning out surprisingly chilling little thrillers on miniscule budgets. His forays into comedy were rare which is a pity, as this film (unreleased in the U.S.) is both appealing and funny. --WKE
