Homelands

The political and the personal intersect in this soulful story about two refugees from El Salvador. Maria and Carlos Robles escaped eight years ago to Australia where they try to maintain their culture and sense of family. Their children have Australian accents but, as this interestingly layered film shows, the impact of emigration can be very different on a husband and a wife. Maria has flourished in Australia, with a teaching job and an active role in the refugee community, while Carlos, who has a menial job, feels acutely the loss of his former political life. Carlos decides to return to El Salvador and set up a literacy program, leaving his family's future in the balance.
