Hoots Mon!

This delightful slapstick is constructed around the talents of one of Britain's finest music hall performers, Max Miller, the "cheeky chappie." The story pits Max, as "England's funniest comedian," in deadly rivalry with "Scotland's Bluebelle," a male impersonator brilliantly played by Florence Desmond. In addition to her rendition of Miller himself, she does a devastating impersonation of Elizabeth Bergner that steals the show. Miller's near-subversive stage humor depended largely on a spontaneous interaction with his audience; lacking this, as The Times (London) critic Peter Waymark wrote in 1984, the film nevertheless "is an effective testament to his astonishing speed of delivery...his cocky vitality, his exquisite timing."
