Tonight's program suggests his range, from the expressive line study of The Horse to the remarkably hand-painted evocation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque of the Red Death. The latter sketches a chilling atmosphere of famine and plague against a background of extraordinary beauty and sensitivity, inspired by Breughel, Hals and Grunewald. Here is that rarity: a Zagreb twice-told tale stripped of obvious political or social parable.
