The Horse and The Masque of the Red Death
Pavao Stalter has emerged as Zagreb's most important and most versatile animation designer. Tonight's program suggests his range, from the expressive line study of The Horse to the remarkably hand-painted evocation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque of the Red Death. The latter sketches a chilling atmosphere of famine and plague against a background of extraordinary beauty and sensitivity, inspired by Breughel, Hals and Grunewald. Here is that rarity: a Zagreb twice-told tale stripped of obvious political or social parable.
