A House in the Quarter (House of the Evening Mists, Gobancho Yugiriro)

The 1950 burning of Kyoto's Golden Pavilion by one of its acolytes was the subject of a novel by Yukio Mishima, “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion”; a film by Kon Ichikawa, Conflagration (Enjo); and another, best-selling novel by Tsutomu Minakami. It is on Minakami's novel that Tasaka has based A House in the Quarter. Whereas Mishima and Ichikawa saw in the story a saga of personal torment and isolation, A House in the Quarter is above all the story of the love between the acolyte and a wholesome young prostitute from the Gobancho pleasure quarter.
