How to Be Loved 5:30

One of Has's best-known films abroad (it won top prize at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1963), and one of his most elegant and accomplished works. It stars the excellent Barbara Krafftowna, and Zbigniew Cybulski, often called the Polish James Dean and best known here for The Saragossa Manuscript and for Wajda's Ashes and Diamonds. On a plane bound for Paris, a successful actress recalls the war years, when she became involved with a handsome but ultimately worthless leading man for whom she provided sanctuary and even pretended to be a collaborator, paying dearly for it after the liberation. Has's drama about the emotional casualties of war fits, more than most of his films, into the Polish School with its "motif of history making sport with people, mocking their dedication..." (Jacek Fuksiewicz, Film & Television in Poland). But for the actress, the flight provides a moment of clarity: how she reacts to her memories will determine her future.
