Humoresque

“A re-working (with fine results) of Mamoulian's Golden Boy, originally intended by script-writer Clifford Odets for John Garfield. (Garfield, although ideally suited for the role, had not yet become a big star.) Humoresque is a grand musical melodrama in the Warner tradition of the '40s.... Helen Wright (Joan Crawford), rich, tipsy patroness of the arts, adopts Paul Boray (Garfield), young, gifted violinist, first as a protegé, then as a lover. The film is distinguished by handsome photography by Ernest Haller; a 115-piece orchestra playing selections from Beethoven, Rossini, Paganini, etc. and led by Franz Waxman; and a fine appearance by Oscar Levant as Boray's accompanist.” Errol Morris.
