Hungry Hill

Based on DuMaurier's novel of a nineteenth century Irish family plagued by feuds and the everpresent "trouble at the mines." William K. Everson: DuMaurier's Gothic romance seemed to have everything but the one thing it most sorely needs: a really generous budget. The plot covers several generations, disasters happen with pleasing frequency, the nice people die and the rotters live, and the whole thing should have been a magnificent welding of Gothic Romance and film noir. But the economy shows, as does the claustrophobia of the studio. Perhaps for that reason it is seldom shown, and it certainly deserves to be given its introduction to PFA audiences.
