A Hunting Accident
. Deeply atmospheric and beautifully shot, Emil Lotyanu's very popular adaptation of this Chekhov novel takes place in the nineteenth-century countryside in Russia and tells a story of crime and passion. The beautiful but poor Olga, forced to marry a wealthy and much older man, later falls in love with the detective Kamyshev (Tarkovsky star Oleg Yankovsky, in a stellar performance). Torn between love and money, her choice will invariably lead to tragedy. A top-drawer Soviet-era production and “a rousing recreation of the times in poetic rather than realistic form” (Variety), A Hunting Accident depicts Russian aristocracy in its most decadent glamour. Music by Evgeniy Doga adds to the film's unforgettable atmosphere.
