I Be Done Been Was Is

This is a lively examination of the lives and careers of black comediennes in our culture, profiling four comediennes: Alice Arthur, Rhonda Hansome, Jane Galvin Lewis, and Marsha Warfield. Through their commentary, and clips from nightclub performances in New York and Los Angeles, they elucidate the obstacles faced by the black comedienne within the entertainment industry, and by women of quick wit, in general, in personal relationships with men. The film also gives a historical outline of the black women who paved the way for these contemporary entertainers in vintage photographs, audio- and videotape excerpts.
