I Walked with a Zombie
Preceded by short:Gaieté Parisienne (U.S., 1939). Featuring the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. Preserved from original negative. (c. 20 mins, Color, 35mm, Courtesy LC, permission Warner Bros.)In I Walked with a Zombie, voodoo and gothic combine for a mesmerizingly atmospheric tale set in Haiti. In a free adaptation of Jane Eyre, Betsy Connell (Frances Dee), private nurse to Jessica Holland, finds herself privy to skeletons in the Holland family closet that hold a particular bearing on the state of her patient. Like Cat People's Irena, Jessica is a kind of receptacle for evil: Haiti's uneasy master-slave relations, an undercurrent throughout the film, are recreated in the uneasy relationships between men and women in the Holland household. But, unlike Irena, the cat's got Jessica's tongue: in a permanent sleepwalking trance, she cannot speak of the roots of her condition. Nurse Connell is tending the walking dead. Voodoo rituals and a haunting ballad, sung by calypso singer Sir Lancelot, make this an unforgettable film experience.Preserved from original negative.
