Imagining Reality

Anticonsumerism, ironic formalism, and slammin' for social justice reign in works from the Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, and Film Departments. The documentaries examine subcultures and challenge the corporate, bureaucratized notion of what it means to be American. Yellow Apparel (Anmol Chaddha, Naomi Iwasaki, Sonya Zehra Mehta, Muang Saechao, Sheng Wang, 31 mins) invites awareness of the appropriation of Asian cultures within American consumerism and of power struggles churning beneath the veneer of oriental ornamentation. The Art of Shoplifting (Camille Acey, Amarina Kealoha, 7 mins) destabilizes mainstream "thou shalt not steal" morals, asserting anticapitalist ethics through juxtaposition of ironic voice-of-God narration and reenactment footage. Cool Canines (Carol Baker, Anes Chang, Kelley Greene, Melissa Olund, Pauline Vanderpalm, 16 mins) provides a glimpse into the sanctuary pets provide for their owners. Mystics (Kelly Rigg, 10 mins) follows an artist, mystic, and heroin addict on the streets he has embraced in renouncing corporate life. The Black Race: Words of Power (Hodari Toure', Satchidananda Mims, Ayo Olagbaju, 18 mins) introduces a local spoken-word poet whose insights into the ongoing struggle for personal and political freedom for herself and her ancestors are given voice in a poem. Poetry in Motion (Robin Goka, Josah Perley, Bond Ren, 16 mins) celebrates a community of poetry slammers, using their outspoken medium to assert voices of resistance against American political and cultural hegemony. I Was an American Soldier (Craig Wright, 10 mins) exposes the army as a "retraining machine," utilizing humor and authorial irony to probe a best friend's disillusionment with patriotism and his refusal to "be all that he can be."Curated by Jason Quinlan, an Anthropology major, and Kate Winters, a Film and Anthropology major, assisted by Michelle Peerali, an American Studies and Film major, and Julie Goulet, an English and Philosophy major and member of the BAM/PFA Student Art Committee.
