Industrial Strength: Edutainment by Artists

Plus surprises! Live Musical Accompaniment by Guitarist Henry KaiserCertain degraded film forms-the industrial, the how-to, the infomercial-have proved to be great troves of irony and wit for the scavenging artist. Fragments of these abject films make for frivolous filler, or the nostalgic marker of forgotten naiveté. But some artists, mining a richer vein, have found these informational modes to be much like B-movies, a low-rent realm of bad acting, clunky theatrics, and gross social concepts. Tonight's program brings together five examples of industrial-strength video, from William Wegman's brand-spanking new Safety Film (1998, 1:40 mins), in which crossing the street becomes an existential crisis, to Animal Charm's Ashley (1998, 9 mins), employing an instructional film for today's Stepford wives; from Torsten Burns & Darrin Martin's Recall (1999, 14:30 mins), where their strange brand of psychico-gesturing meets its match in a sensitivity session, to RTMark's Bringing It To You (1998, 11 mins), a clever subversion cross-dressing as an infomercial; and finally to Phil Garner & Chip Lord's fully torqued Chevrolet Training Film: Remake (1978, 28 mins), their infiltration of the sales techniques that won the West.-Steve SeidAs a special added attraction, local string-whiz Henry Kaiser will accompany his own industrial, You Are Safeway (1975, 14 mins, 16mm), featuring a cameo appearance by J.P. Gorin. Here, the calm surrounding two store managers will be disrupted by the dissonance of industrial-strength guitar.
