Intriguing People
Bay Area Premiere! Eder Santos and Composer Stephen Vitiello in Person (Enredando as Pessoas). Brazilian artist Eder Santos's first feature-length work, Intriguing People, shot in Spain, employs a richly varied score by Stephen Vitiello to mobilize the mystical journey of an image prophet who can project his vision into the world. This prophet finds himself in a landscape where images-regardless of their deceitfulness, or honesty-wield enormous influence. His pilgrimage among men and cultures is told through "electronic parables," a series of off-kilter and comic musings on love, language, and religion. Whether soothingly muted or harshly staccato, rhythm is the thing with Eder Santos's lyrical meditations on contemporary life. His highly stylized images gain a visual velocity all their own through propulsive musical scores. Felt more through nuance, suggestion, and tone, Santos's cinematic ruminations are often oblique, or outright enigmatic. For this reason, the musicality of his works, the syncopation and cadence, helps engage the viewer's imagination. Through Vitiello's guitar-driven compositions, Santos is able to mold his intriguing monologues into a haunting mood piece.-Steve Seid
