Invincible Lovers
This extraordinary film follows the weird odyssey of a young boy who escapes the orphanage where he has been left and sets out to find the village home of his grandmother. Vassilis is a boy with the face and bearing of a man: in him we can see all the grief and abandonment of the Greek people themselves. He hops a train out of Athens for Tripolis, in southern Greece, and hikes through the mountainous countryside, all the while knowing exactly where he is going, and why, and all the while silent, even when spoken to. Vassilis is joined by a young woman tourist who, unlike him, has no destination, and together they find the village-totally deserted. The film's minimalist style emphasizes the sense of isolation and loneliness of this boy who will continue his journey into premature manhood. But in the end, Invincible Lovers beautifully reaffirms the need not to run away.
