Invisible Light
Gina Kim is mastering the art of baring one's soul in front of the camera. In her documentary Gina Kim's Video Diary, she demonstrated the ability to capture subtle depths of emotion. This is echoed in her debut narrative feature Invisible Light, where lingering, meticulously framed shots expose turbulent and varying emotions of inner struggles and psychological extremes. Choi Yoon Sun (as Gah-in) and Lee Sun Jin (Do-hee) give daring performances as two women faced with despair, yet struggling to reclaim their mental strength. Gah-in is having an affair with Do-hee's husband; distressed by the illicit relationship, she retreats into a self-hating routine of starving and binging. At the same time, Do-hee learns that she is pregnant with another man's child. Alone throughout much of the film, the women are stripped naked physically and psychically. Achingly beautiful, Invisible Light is a remarkable achievement in the genre of psychological cinema.
Please note: Due to a scheduling conflict, Ms. Kim will be unable to attend this screening as announced in BAM/PFA Art & Film Notes.
