One morning, an ordinary businessman wakes to find a metal thorn sticking out of his cheek. It is the beginning of his war/love affair with a metal fetishist whose machinations cause the hero's bizarre physical transformation. As Iron Man, his new drill-like phallus seems to have a mind, and emotions, of its own. Iron Man instantly gained a cult following on its release last year in Tokyo. The first feature by young Shinya Tsukamoto, it has been seen as a hybrid of Eraserhead and Robocop, but more deranged than both. And more pointed; certainly, it gives new meaning to the term, "the age of mechanical reproduction." An industrial music score and highly inventive, nightmarish visuals destine Iron Man for cult status here as well. But its violent sexual imagery may be disturbing to viewers.
