It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing
Spotlighting some of the great composers and improvisors of the 1920s, '30s, '40s and '50s: Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller, Nat "King" Cole, Cab Calloway, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Louis Armstrong, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Benny Goodman, Louis Jordan, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Gene Krupa... and other surprises! Mark Cantor has been researching and collecting music on film for the past ten years, focusing on jazz, blues, rhythm-and-blues, western swing, Swing and other forms of popular music. The rare clips he introduces tonight come from a variety of sources, including feature films, documentaries, television broadcasts, short films, Panoram soundies (the "juke-box with a screen" from the '40s) and others.
