It Should Happen to You
With the help of scriptwriter Garson Kanin, Judy Holliday fine-tuned the character she was to make her own (see December 28): the not-so-dumb blonde with a finger on the pulse of America. Here, she makes monkeys out of Madison Avenue, television, and especially the gullible public as a nobody who literally makes a name for herself by investing in New York City billboards that read, simply, "Gladys Glover." The offers begin pouring in. Jack Lemmon makes his screen debut as Gladys' boyfriend, a poor-but-honest documentary filmmaker who might as well be on Mars as in the status-seeking America of the '50s.
