It Started with Eve

Charles Laughton is made up to be a mustachioed, mischievous cupid to Deanna Durbin and Robert Cummings in this comedy that was a major hit of 1941. William K. Everson considers It Started with Eve “the last of the ‘vintage' Durbin vehicles, and also the last to be produced by the Pasternak-Koster team before new producers and directors moved in to change and ‘update' her image. Funny, poignant and above all sophisticated, this is one of her best--and today has added values not apparent in 1941 in that the whole opening and much of the art direction is a genial parody of that year's Citizen Kane, which hadn't yet reached many audiences but had certainly impressed Hollywood filmmakers.”
