Jacques Feyder: "A New Wave"

Preceded by Gaumont newsreels of 1917. Feyder, whose work in the twenties combined luminous realism with impressionism, and who in the thirties was a leading light of poetic realism, got his start directing at Gaumont in 1915 when the war created a shortage of directors. He was married to the actress Fran?oise Rosay, who starred in many of his greatest films and who appears in the first two films in tonight's program. La Faute d'orthographe (Jacques Feyder, 1918). A modest man who applies for a job in an insurance firm is tormented by the idea that he has made a simple spelling mistake on his application.
