Jazz on Film: Program I

After a hiatus of over two years, jazz-film archivist Mark Cantor returns to PFA with two new programs of exciting and always swinging jazz on film. Although many of the performers will be familiar to those who have attended Mr. Cantor's programs in the past, most all of the films screened will be new to PFA audiences-in fact, quite a few recent discoveries will be seen for the first time in public. Sunday's matinee focuses on mainstream sounds: swing, big band jazz and "pre-bop." Among the performers to be highlighted are Stephane Grappelli, Benny Goodman, Big Joe Turner, Duke Ellington and a portion of a "Jazz at the Philharmonic" concert featuring Roy Eldridge, Stan Getz and the great Jo Jones. Other "specialty" sets will include music by women in jazz (including a previously unscreened performance by the fabulous International Sweethearts of Rhythm) and great jazz dancers, including John Bubbles and Bunny Briggs. Special surprises, as always, should be expected!
